In a reader survey fielded in October, restaurant development + design magazine asked readers what design trend had the greatest impact on restaurant projects in 2025. The open-ended responses ranged from cheeky — one reader noted that they’d mainly been working on prisons and convention centers in 2025 and that “crime was beginning to pay again” — to sincere.
Overall
Readers noted the usual concerns and priorities when it comes to restaurant design: “clean and efficient layouts,” and “continued emphasis on convenience, speed of service and guest experience.”
One reader summarized a point that is a key theme within the pages of rd+d: “designs that are uniquely designed to support the brand experience.”
Experiential design came up repeatedly in responses. Readers are “creating more experiential spaces” that are also flexible and allow for changes over time.
One savvy reader noted they’re seeing a “greater spread between high and low: casual elegance [is] losing its place.”
Party in the Front
In terms of aesthetics, readers reported that they are seeing more lighter color interiors, more textiles and textures, and upgraded outdoor seating. Overall, “luxurious vibes” are trending, but what that means in each space varies. Others said “visually stimulating” spaces and “warmth” were key trends.
One reader noted that “more organic interiors are being requested” from operator clients. Another said that they’re designing to give the feeling that every zone is well ventilated.
Business in the Back
In the back of the house, readers are getting requests for electrification and reduced footprints, with one noting the top request was “shrinking the kitchen and modernizing the FOH without creating a dent in the overall budget.”
Other key trends that resonated with readers included acoustical concerns, AI and robotics, kiosk ordering, the challenges of off-premises dining, and all that it entails (take-out areas, third-party delivery services and app ordering).
