Do you make lists and resolutions and balance on the edge of goals and self-defeating
behaviors this time of year?
Or is that just me?

The start of the year is always a good time to assess. At rd+d, we start the year with reflection. You can find the best restaurant designs of 2018, in the third annual rd+d awards! Not only do the awards provide a chance to look back on some of the bright restaurant design spots from last year, but they also provide a list of must-see restaurants to check out on your next sojourn. I can’t wait to go back to my home state of Michigan to check out the award-winning Prime + Proper, for example.

After some reflection and a few pats on the back for a job well done — a good assessment must always give credit where it is due — the next step is to set goals for 2019 and start turning those goals into actions. First up for rd+d: The Outfitter is a brand-new department launching in this issue. In this section, readers will highlight the design and materials trends in specific market segments and consider how best to outfit those kinds of restaurants.

Another big change is the
relaunch of rddmag.com. We’ve been working behind the scenes for months to create an attractive, easy-to-use, mobile-friendly, seamless reading experience online. Feel free to let us know if you like it (or if you don’t — and why).

One plan for early 2019 is to attend The NAFEM Show in Orlando, Fla., in February. It’s a must-see for kitchen designers and a great chance to check out all of the incredible restaurants featured in Design Market as well as this issue’s Project Profile on Hawkers Asian Street Fare. I hope to see them all, and I hope to see some of you there as well.

As always, feel free to share your goals, projects, challenges, rants and raves with us.

Happy New Year!
