Adaptive Reuse: Element Shines in Former Hospital Power Plant
At its largest, City Hospital in St. Louis occupied four city blocks with 12 separate structures, including a power plant that supplied power to the entire complex. Built in 1906, the hospital was shuttered in the mid-1980s and sat vacant for more than 25 years before developers began to breathe new life into the historic structures and, in turn, revitalize the surrounding neighborhood. Element, a New American, “contemporary comfort food” restaurant designed by St. Louis-based RemigerDesign, has played a significant role in that revitalization since its opening in September 2013.

Founded four years ago by Paul Motenko and Jerry Hennessy, former co-CEOs of BJ’s Restaurants, STACKED: Food Well Built is preparing to open its fifth restaurant, in Huntington Beach, Calif., this fall.

NBC Sports Grill & Brew Coming to Universal CityWalk
The first NBC Sports Grill & Brew is set to open this November in the Universal CityWalk dining, retail and entertainment complex in Orlando. The new concept is designed to celebrate and showcase the network’s award-winning sports coverage in a stylish setting with wall-to-wall sports coverage and some special design features, including 90 big screens and a high-definition screen across its exterior front that’s more than 100 feet wide.
Henry’s Tavern Lands at PDX
As part of its drive to feature iconic local establishments among its foodservice offerings, Portland International Airport (PDX) has added the city’s historic Henry’s Tavern American Bar & Grill to the mix. The brewpub and restaurant opened at PDX on June 4.
Foodservice Industry Continues to Battle for Market Share
Despite flat traffic levels, foodservice spending increased 3 percent for the year ending April 2015, according to The NPD Group. The market research firm attributes this growth to the fact that operators continue to increase prices to offset rising expenses in such areas as labor and food.
