Restroom Fixtures & Equipment

They may not be revenue-generating spaces, but restrooms — their aesthetics, cleanliness and general state of repair — are big contributors to guests’ impressions of the overall restaurant experience. Discount their importance, and you risk losing customers and gaining negative reviews even if your food and service are top-notch.

While different brands and concepts take unique approaches to fitting out their restrooms, and some go all out to create fun, must-see side experiences, every restaurant’s restroom design strategy should start with more mundane considerations, led by cleanliness, durability and ADA compliance. Commercial-grade finishes that convey cleanliness and are easy to maintain, as well as fixtures that are easy to operate and ergonomically designed to help maintain a clean environment, are imperative.

From there, the focus moves to selecting finishes, colors, artwork/graphics and lighting that’s consistent with the brand experience offered in the dining areas — but that just might offer a memorable design twist or two. A specialty tile, a statement sink, funky wallpaper, a fabulous mirror or other signature feature can surprise and delight — and have guests recommending a visit to the loo to their tablemates. Here’s how three restaurants have created buzz around their bathrooms:

At the Sinema Restaurant + Bar in Nashville, Tenn., Anderson Design Studio took inspiration from the building’s origins as the historic 1940s Melrose Theater to bring a dose of Hollywood glam to the ladies’ lounge. Key design features include large mirrors rimmed with dressing-room-style makeup lights, patterned terrazzo floors, Carrara marble countertops and starlight wall sconces. The room, a finalist in this year’s America’s Best Restrooms contest, is a frequent “must-see” destination and popular selfie stage for guests.

At Wu Chow in Austin, Texas, the sleek but playful interior aesthetic was created with soaring windows, metallic upholstery, bright green lacquered communal tabletops and a feature wall covered in mah-jongg tiles. And the vibe extends to the restrooms. In the men’s room, highlights include a Bruce Lee mural and a pebble-filled sink. In the women’s room, flower-shaped pendant lighting and wallpaper covered in a flowing pattern of koi fish add to the experience.

At Sloan’s Ice Cream, based in West Palm Beach, Fla., the restrooms are as big a draw as the dizzying array of ice creams and confections. Carrying its over-the-top, cotton-candy-wonderland branding ethos to the restrooms, clear glass doors take transparency in restaurant design to a whole new level. They provide a clear view into the room from the front of the house, but once a guest steps inside and locks the door, the glass magically fogs up and becomes completely opaque. It’s a novelty that’s as appropriate to the brand as the main room’s hot pink walls, twinkling chandeliers, giant lollipops, miniature working train and toys at every turn.
